Why it surprises

Mauna Kea in Hawaiʻi is sometimes described as Earth’s tallest mountain, and in one sense that is true: measured from its base on the ocean floor to its summit, it is taller than Everest. But that is a different question. Measured as summit elevation above sea level, the usual way mountains are ranked, Mauna Kea reaches about 4,207 m and Mount Everest about 8,849 m, more than twice as high. Most of Mauna Kea’s bulk is hidden under the Pacific, which is why its base-to-peak height is so large while its summit stays comparatively low. Everest is the highest point above sea level on Earth. Different measures crown different mountains, so it matters which one a question uses. This duel uses height above sea level, where Everest wins easily.
