How a round works

Pick one of four

Tap a name or press 1 to 4. Your first answer is the one that counts, so take your time: there is no clock.

See why

After each flag you see the right country and a note on what to look for, like the double-width band or the star in the corner.

Practise the misses

Flags you miss collect on My progress. Run a short review round of just those, as often as you like.

Questions

Atlas Play is a small, honest flags quiz: 193 flags, each checked one by one, with every source listed.

How to play All 193 flags

Is Atlas Play free?

Yes. The daily round and every pack are free, with no account and no sign-up.

How does a round work?

You see ten flags, one at a time, each with four country names to choose from. There is no timer. You get one answer per flag; then Atlas Play shows the right country and a short note on how to recognise it. Revealing the answer instead scores zero.

Which countries are included?

193 flags: 191 of the 193 UN member states plus the two UN observer states, each checked one by one. They start with six starter packs of the 60 best-known flags; 11 explorer packs hold the rest by region, and 4 look-alike packs mix the flags that are easiest to confuse. Afghanistan and Honduras are left out of the flag quiz on purpose (no single flag answer could be settled; the sources page says why) but are in Capitals and Outlines. The packs are learning groups, not official regions; the sources page lists every record.

Where do the flag pictures come from?

From flag-icons, an open-source flag collection under the MIT licence, served from this site. Each design was compared with a reference description. Flags are shown at the same 4:3 shape on a stamp-style card, so their proportions can differ from the official ones; a few countries have a civil and a state version, and the country page says which one is shown.

How does the daily round work?

Everyone gets the same ten flags each day, changing at midnight UTC. Monday is gentle and the week gets harder; Saturday is a look-alike round where the choices are flags that are easy to mix up. Finish it on its day to grow your streak; a round you start before midnight still counts if you finish within two hours after. Past days are in the archive and never change your streak.

Does my progress save?

Yes, in this browser only. Leave in the middle of a round and you continue at the same flag with the same choices. My progress shows your streak, calendar and the flags that need practice.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the quiz, the daily schedule and every flag are kept on your device, and you can add Atlas Play to your home screen.
