Is a badminton net at the doubles sidelines lower than a men’s volleyball net at the centre?

Yes. A badminton net, at 1.55 m, is shorter than a men’s volleyball net, at 2.43 m, which is about 1.6 times as tall.

Both drawn to the same scale: Badminton net (at the posts), 1.55 m (top of the net at the doubles sidelines); Volleyball net (men’s), 2.43 m (top edge of the net, men’s game).

The duel opens first in a practice round of ten; practice never changes your daily streak.

Why it surprises

In a school sports hall the same posts sometimes hold a badminton net one day and a volleyball net the next, so it is easy to think the two nets hang at about the same height. They do not. Under the international rules a badminton net stands 1.55 m high at the doubles sidelines, while a men’s volleyball net is set at 2.43 m, measured at the centre of the court. The volleyball net is therefore about 1.6 times as high, almost 90 cm more. Both sports say exactly where the height is measured, because a net can sag a little in the middle: badminton’s rule fixes the height at the sides, volleyball’s at the centre. Even the women’s volleyball net, set lower than the men’s, stands well above a badminton net.
