Is a blue whale typically longer than an adult male sperm whale?
Yes. A blue whale, at about 25 m, is longer than a male sperm whale, at about 16 m: about 1.6 times as long.
The duel opens first in a practice round of ten; practice never changes your daily streak.
Why it surprises
Sperm whales are giants that hunt squid in the deep ocean, and their huge, square heads make them look enormous, so it is easy to expect them to rival the blue whale. They do not. A typical adult blue whale is about 25 m long from nose to tail, while an adult male sperm whale is about 16 m, so the blue whale is about one and a half times as long. Females differ: female blue whales are on average a little longer than males, while female sperm whales are much smaller than males, which is why this duel uses the male sperm whale. Diet is no guide to size either. The blue whale lives almost entirely on krill, tiny shrimp-like animals, while the smaller sperm whale dives deep after squid and other larger prey.
