Why it surprises
Kilimanjaro is a household name, while K2 is known mainly to climbers and mountain lovers, so it is easy to assume the more famous mountain is the higher one. It is not even close. The summit of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo cone stands about 5,895 m above sea level; K2, in the Karakoram range, reaches about 8,611 m, the second-highest summit on Earth after Everest. K2 is about 1.5 times as high, roughly 2,700 m higher. The two are very different kinds of mountain: Kilimanjaro is a volcano rising from the plains around it, while K2 is a steep peak surrounded by other high mountains. This duel compares elevation above sea level, not how much each mountain rises above the land around it.
