Does Vietnam have more people than France?
Yes. Vietnam has more people than France: about 102 million against 68.7 million (World Bank estimates for 2025), 1.5 times as many.
Vietnam is also more crowded: 324 people per km² of land against 128.

Why it surprises
France has more land than Vietnam, about 539,000 km² against 313,000 km², and it is one of the best-known countries in the world, so it can be surprising that Vietnam has far more people: about 102 million against 68.7 million in the World Bank’s 2025 estimates, about one and a half times as many. Pictures of Vietnam often show the busy streets of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but most Vietnamese do not live in big cities. Vietnam’s statistics office counted about 61% of the population as rural in 2025, a very large number of people living in the countryside rather than in the cities that appear in photographs. Vietnam ranks 16th in the world by population in our deck and France 23rd, and Vietnam is much more crowded: about 324 people per km² of land, against France’s 128.
