Does Vietnam have more people than Germany?
Yes. Vietnam has more people than Germany: about 102 million against 83.5 million (World Bank estimates for 2025), 1.2 times as many.
Vietnam is also more crowded: 324 people per km² of land against 239.

Why it surprises
Vietnam and Germany have almost the same amount of land, about 313,000 km² and 349,000 km² in our deck, yet Vietnam has clearly more people: about 102 million against 83.5 million in the World Bank’s 2025 estimates. It is easy to picture Germany as the bigger of the two. The difference comes from how the two populations have changed. Vietnam’s statistics office reported growth of about 1% in 2024 alone. In Germany, deaths have outnumbered births every year since 1972, so any growth has come from people moving there. Over decades, those different paths add up. Vietnam is also the more crowded country, with about 324 people per km² of land against Germany’s 239, and it ranks 16th in the world by population in our deck, three places ahead of Germany.
