Does Bangladesh have more people than Russia?
Yes. Bangladesh has more people than Russia: about 176 million against 144 million (World Bank estimates for 2025), 1.2 times as many.
Bangladesh is also more crowded: 1,350 people per km² of land against 8.8.

Why it surprises
Bangladesh would fit into Russia more than 120 times over, so it is hard to believe it has more people. It does: about 176 million against 144 million in the World Bank’s 2025 estimates. Our deck counts about 130,000 km² of land in Bangladesh and about 16.4 million km² in Russia. The difference lies in how closely people live together. Density is the number of people per square kilometre of land, and Bangladesh has about 1,350, the sixth-highest figure of the 194 countries in our deck, behind only a few small city-states and island nations. Russia has fewer than 9, because most of its vast territory is very thinly settled. A country’s outline on the map shows its area, not its people, and this pair shows the difference more clearly than almost any other.
