How to play
A new Pub Quiz comes out every Friday at 6:00 PM in Amsterdam (5:00 PM in London; it follows summer time). Each edition has fifty questions in five rounds of ten, the same for everyone. Past editions stay playable in the archive.
The rounds
- 1
General knowledge
Ten questions on anything and everything.
- 2
Picture round
Flags, country outlines and silhouettes, all drawn by us. Name what you see.
- 3
Numbers
Type a number. Close enough wins the point; in team games the closest team wins it.
- 4
Theme of the week
Ten questions on this week’s theme.
- 5
Wipeout
Answer or pass. One wrong answer and the whole round is worth nothing.
Pick or type
Before you start, choose Multiple choice (four answers, tap one or press A–D) or Harder: type your answers. Typed answers accept common other spellings, and a small typo in a longer answer is forgiven; a typo that is closer to a wrong answer isn’t. The numbers round is always typed: write 1,200, 3.5 million or 12k.
Scoring
One point per right answer, ten per round, fifty in all. In the numbers round you score when your number is close enough (each question says how close counts, for example within 10 steps); you also see how far off you were. In Wipeout you may pass: a pass scores nothing, a right answer scores a point and one wrong answer wipes out the round. After each round you see the round scores so far; at the end, your score out of fifty.
When you finish this week’s quiz in its own week, Pub Quiz can show one line on how other players did. Your result is sent anonymously, never your answers. Switch it off in Settings.
Team quiz nights
Open Host a quiz night on a laptop or computer connected to a TV or projector and pick an edition (this week’s, or any past one). The big screen shows a code. Each team joins on one phone at nofussgames.com/pub-quiz/join with the code and a team name.
- One phone per team (the default): the first phone of a team is the captain and answers for the team. Other phones can join the same team to follow along.
- Everyone answers: every phone in a team answers, and the team’s most common answer counts (for numbers, the middle value).
- Jokers: before a round starts, each team can play its one joker on it. That round’s points are doubled (a wiped-out Wipeout stays at zero).
- Numbers: the team closest to the right number wins the point (ties share it).
- The host decides when to show each answer. After every round the screen shows the round scoreboard, and at the end the final standings are revealed from last place to first.
Beat the Quizmaster
For a family or a group around one screen: choose Beat the Quizmaster when you host. The Quizmaster sets a target score for the edition, shown at the start. Everyone answers together, by tapping on the big screen or on phones that join the room (then the most common answer counts). Reach the target to win.
Calm
Calm is a setting for every No Fuss game on this device: larger text and buttons, stronger contrast, no animations and no comparison lines. Switch it on in Settings or on the Calm page.
Keyboards and screen readers
Each question is a heading followed by labelled answer buttons or a text box. Letters or numbers answer, P passes in Wipeout, Enter goes on. After you answer, the result and the explanation are read out. Picture questions describe what kind of picture is shown (a flag, an outline, a silhouette); the picture itself can’t be described without giving the answer away.
