Why it surprises

Frankenstein feels like the start of modern science fiction, and Pride and Prejudice like a timeless story of manners, so neither book’s style gives away its date. Pride and Prejudice came first: it came out in January 1813, while Frankenstein’s first edition appeared anonymously in 1818, five years later. Both authors had worked on their books well before publication. Jane Austen began an early version, called First Impressions, in 1796, and Mary Shelley started Frankenstein in 1816 and finished a first draft the following year. Shelley also revised the novel for a later edition, which is the text many readers know. This duel compares the original first editions, not when the authors began writing or later revised versions, and on that measure Austen’s novel is the elder.
