Why it surprises
France is in Europe and Toronto is in Canada, so Toronto must be further north, or so the shortcut goes. It turns up as a true-or-false question in geography quizzes. The centre of Paris lies at 48.9° N, Toronto’s at 43.7° N, so Paris is about 580 km further north. Toronto is level with Nice and Florence. The climates add to the confusion. Paris gets a mix of Atlantic and continental air, and much of the time the Atlantic’s mild air dominates. Toronto’s winters are cold, although the Great Lakes reduce the extremes compared with places further inland. Canada also stretches far to the north, but most of its big cities lie close to the US border, some of them further south than Paris.
