Why it surprises

Montreal is famous for long, snowy winters and Paris for mild ones, so it seems natural that Paris lies further south. It does not. The centre of Paris is at 48.9° N and Montreal’s at 45.5° N, about 370 km further south. On our globe Montreal lines up with Milan and Lyon, while Paris is almost level with Stuttgart. The difference in winters comes from where the air has been. Western Europe is downwind of the Atlantic, whose water stores summer heat and releases it slowly, and the Gulf Stream carries extra warmth from the tropics towards Europe. Montreal sits deep in a continent, and its winter air usually arrives over frozen land with little open sea to soften it. So in this pair the colder city is the southern one, by more than three degrees of latitude.
