Why it surprises

This is a classic quiz question, and the right answer is the one most people expect: Moscow is further north. What surprises is how far. Moscow’s centre lies at 55.8° N, about 470 km north of London at 51.5° N, and level with Copenhagen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The two climates differ even more than that gap suggests. London’s air usually arrives from the Atlantic, which gives it cooler summers and milder winters than its latitude would suggest. The Moscow region lies far from any sea, so its temperatures swing much more over the year, with long, frosty winters. Part of what feels like Moscow being “much further north” is really the difference between an ocean climate and a continental one.
