Why it surprises

London and Berlin feel like neighbours on roughly the same east–west line, and since Britain is an island in the north, many people assume London is the northern one. It is not, though only just: Berlin’s centre lies at 52.5° N and London’s at 51.5° N, about 110 km further south. Berlin is level with Amsterdam and Birmingham; London with Antwerp and Düsseldorf. Weather is a poor clue too. Berlin lies where Atlantic and continental influences meet, so its winters are colder than London’s, while the air that reaches London has usually crossed the sea, which softens both summer and winter. That gentler climate makes London feel like the more southern city. Neither city’s weather is a reliable clue to latitude, and at about one degree apart, this pair is one of the closest that Further North? asks.
