Why it surprises

Brazil covers almost half of South America and is the fifth-largest country by land in our deck, so it seems certain to have more people than Pakistan. It does not. In the World Bank’s 2025 estimates Pakistan has about 255 million people and Brazil about 213 million; Pakistan ranks fifth in the world by population and Brazil seventh. Brazil has nearly 11 times as much land, about 8.4 million km² against 771,000 km². The gap in density is just as large in the other direction: about 331 people per km² of land in Pakistan and about 25 in Brazil. Population density measures people per unit of area, and people are never spread evenly across a country. A large shape on the map tells you how much land there is, not how many people live on it.
