Why it surprises
Canada feels northern and Italy southern, but Rome and Ottawa are closer than their countries suggest. Ottawa’s centre lies at 45.4° N and Rome’s at 41.9° N, so Ottawa is further north, by about 390 km. Even so, Ottawa is level with northern Italy: Milan and Turin share its latitude, and the snowy city on the Ottawa River is further south than Paris, Munich or Vienna. Many people would put Canada’s capital much further north than that. The climates explain the impression. Ottawa has large seasonal swings, with hot summers and very cold winters, because its weather comes across a continent. Rome is shaped by the Mediterranean nearby, with sea and land breezes and mild winters. The answer is the expected one; the size of the gap is the surprise.
