The first big snow of the winter has closed the mountain pass, and the Highfold Inn is cut off until the ploughs get through. Mira is counting candles, Rafi is planning three days of meals, and Noor has unpacked her paints by the window. At suppertime, Rafi cannot find the one thing he needs.

The old recipe book was carried off from the kitchen and not put back.
