How to play

Each list asks for every member of one fixed set: every club in a league season, every nation that has won a trophy, every player who started a final. The page says exactly what counts and as of when. The board shows one empty place for each answer.

Type the names you know

Type a name in the box. The moment it matches an answer, it fills its place on the board, the box clears and you can type the next one. You don’t need to press Enter, though Enter works too. The order doesn’t matter.

What counts as the right spelling

  • Capitals, accents, hyphens, spaces, full stops and apostrophes never matter: atletico is Atlético, saint etienne is Saint-Étienne, muenchen is München.
  • & and and are the same.
  • Club words such as FC, AFC, CF, SC, AC, SV, VfB, VfL and “the”, and numbers like the 04 in Schalke 04, can be left out.
  • Each answer has its common short names and nicknames, so Spurs or Man Utd count where they are what people say. Something that could mean two answers (“United” on its own) never counts.
  • One typo (a letter missing, one too many, a wrong letter or two letters swapped) is forgiven in names of six letters or more, but only where it can’t be mistaken for another answer on the same list. A name with a typo fills in when you press Enter, or after a short pause.
  • When what you typed is also the start of another answer still to find (“Bayer” while “Bayern” is open), nothing fills in until you type on, or press Enter to add the shorter one.

Untimed or a timed run

Lists are untimed: take as long as you like, leave and come back later, your answers are saved. For a challenge, choose a 2:00 or 5:00 run before you start: the clock starts when you press Start and doesn’t stop if you leave the page. When it reaches 0:00, the board shows what you missed.

Giving up, practice and your best

Press Give up whenever you like. The answers you missed appear on the board, marked “missed” with a dashed outline. Then you can practise just the ones you missed (practice never changes your result), play the whole list again, share your result or go on to the next list. Your best result on each list is kept on this device.

League Atlas

In League Atlas you place every club of one league season on the map of its country. A club’s name appears: tap or click where you think its ground is. The map then shows the real ground, how many kilometres off you were and the band: Spot on (up to 15 km), Close (up to 50 km), Near (up to 150 km) or Far. The ground stays on the map, so the league’s map fills up as you go. The clubs come in the same order for everyone.

No mouse? Focus the map, move the crosshair with the arrow keys (add Shift for bigger steps) and press Enter. With a screen reader, or whenever you like, choose “Choose from four towns instead” and pick the club’s town from four; your pin goes on that town’s ground. At the end you see your average distance and every club, furthest first, and you can practise the ones further than 50 km.

The list of the day

Every day at midnight UTC there is a list of the day, the same for everyone. Every list can be played any time; the list of the day is just a nudge.

Calm

Calm is a setting for every No Fuss game on this device: larger text, stronger contrast, no animations, no clock and no best results. In Football Club it removes the timed runs. Switch it on in Settings (the sliders at the top) or on the Calm page.

Screen readers and keyboards

The answer box is labelled with what to type, each name you get is announced (“Arsenal, 1 of 20 found”), and the board is an ordered list that says which places are still empty. Everything works with the keyboard alone: type, Enter, Tab to the buttons.

Sharing

After a list you can share three short lines: the list, a row of dots (filled for the share you found) and your total, with the link. No names are given away.
