No Fuss Classroom
Privacy for schools
This page explains, for teachers, school leaders and data protection officers, what happens to data when a class uses No Fuss Classroom at nofussgames.com/classroom. It is written to be checked against your school’s own rules. If something is unclear or missing for your school, email support@twindle.nl.
In short
- No accounts for pupils or teachers. Pupils type a nickname; please ask them not to use their full name.
- While a room is open, our server keeps the nicknames, the answers each pupil gave and the quiz settings, so the board can show results.
- When the room closes (the teacher closes it, after 30 minutes without play, or after four hours at most) every nickname and answer is deleted. Only anonymous daily counts remain, such as the number of class quizzes and pupils that day, without names, codes or answers.
- No tracking of pupils: no cookies, no advertising, no profiles, no analytics on the pupils’ page or on the board. Our privacy-friendly statistics (Umami, run by us, no cookies) only count visits to the teacher pages: the Classroom home page and this page.
- Everything runs on our own server in Germany. We use no third-party services for Classroom: no fonts, scripts or images are loaded from other companies.
What pupils see and type
A pupil opens nofussgames.com/classroom/join, types the code from the board and a nickname of 2 to 16 letters or numbers. A short built-in list refuses obvious rude words; every nickname must be unique in the room; the teacher can rename or remove any pupil. A pupil’s screen shows the question, the answer buttons, whether their own answer was right and their own score. It never shows other pupils’ names or answers. Their place in the class appears only while the teacher shows the leaderboard.
What the board shows
The board (the teacher’s screen, usually on a projector) shows the code, the nicknames of the pupils in the room, how many pupils chose each answer, and, only if the teacher switches it on, a leaderboard of nicknames and scores. It never shows which pupil chose which answer during the quiz. At the end the teacher can print a summary with each nickname’s answers per question; that printout is made in the teacher’s browser and we keep no copy.
What stays on the devices
To let a device rejoin after a reload, the browser keeps a small note on that device: on the teacher’s computer the room code, a recovery code and the board’s key (cr1:host), and the light or dark setting (cr1:theme); on a pupil’s device the room code, the nickname and the pupil’s key (cr1:seat). These are not cookies and are never used for statistics. They stop working when the room closes; clearing the browser’s site data removes them.
On our server
The keys are stored only as one-way codes. To stop anyone flooding the service, the server counts requests per scrambled IP address, using a key that is thrown away every day; IP addresses are never stored or logged, and neither are nicknames, codes or answers. Rooms are held in one database on our server in Nuremberg, Germany (Hetzner Online GmbH, our hosting processor) and deleted as described above.
For schools
Because Classroom has no accounts and keeps pupil data for a few hours at most, most schools use it like a whiteboard exercise: the teacher decides to use it, pupils take part with a nickname. If your school needs a written agreement or a completed privacy questionnaire before using a tool, email us and we’ll help. We are still collecting what schools in different EU countries expect, so tell us what yours needs.
The legal details
This part is what the GDPR (article 13) asks us to tell you, kept short.
Who is responsible
No Fuss Classroom is run by TWINDLE NEDERLAND B.V. (trading as Idistic), a Dutch private limited company. That company is the controller for the personal data described on this page. Contact: support@twindle.nl (English or Dutch). Company details.
What we use, why, and for how long
- Sending you the pages. Our web server uses your IP address and the address of the page you ask for, only to answer the request. We keep no access logs. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a working, secure website (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- Limiting abuse. To stop anyone flooding the class quiz rooms, the server counts requests per scrambled IP address: a one-way code made with a key that is thrown away every day. Legal basis: legitimate interest in keeping the service available (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Kept: one day at most.
- Visitor statistics. With Umami, which we host ourselves, we count page views and a few game events: the page, the site you came from, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language. Umami works out your country, region and city from your IP address without storing the address, and recognises repeat visits within a month by a one-way code made from your IP address, browser details and a secret that changes every month, which cannot be turned back into either. It sets no cookies and cannot follow you from one site to another. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in learning which pages and games people use, so we can improve them (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Kept: 25 months. Only the teacher pages (the Classroom home page and this privacy page) load the statistics; the board on /classroom/host/ and the pupils’ page on /classroom/join/ never do.
- Class quizzes. The nickname each pupil types (not their real name, please), which answer each pupil gave to each question and when, the scores worked out from those answers, the teacher’s quiz settings, and a scrambled copy (a one-way code) of each device’s rejoin key. No accounts, email addresses, real names, photos or chat. Nicknames and answers are shown on the teacher’s board; a pupil’s device only shows that pupil’s own answers and score (and their place, only while the teacher shows the leaderboard). Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running the quiz a teacher starts and pupils join, with as little data as possible (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Kept: until the room closes (the teacher closes it, or after 30 minutes without play, or after four hours at most); then every nickname and answer is deleted and only anonymous daily counts remain, such as how many class quizzes were played. A summary the teacher prints is made in the teacher’s own browser and is not kept by us.
- When you email us. Your email address and your message, to answer you. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in helping you (art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), or our contract with you when it is about a purchase (art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Kept: up to 2 years after the conversation ends.
On your device only, this site keeps cr1:host in local storage: on the teacher’s computer: the room code, a recovery code and the key that lets the board reconnect to its room; cr1:seat in local storage: on a pupil’s device: the room code, the nickname and the key that lets the device rejoin after a reload; and cr1:theme in local storage: on the teacher’s computer: the board’s light or dark setting. They are never sent to us; clearing this site’s data removes them.
Who else is involved
- Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany) runs the servers this site and our services use, in its data centre in Nuremberg, Germany, as our processor.
- Nobody else. We don’t sell data and don’t share it with advertisers.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the personal data we have about you, to correct or delete it, to restrict its use, or to give it to you in a format you can take elsewhere. You can also object to what we do on the basis of legitimate interest (statistics and abuse limits). Email support@twindle.nl; we answer within one month. Because we don’t ask who you are, we often can’t link stored data to you; tell us which site you used and when, and we’ll do what we can. Data kept in your own browser is yours: clear this site’s data in your browser settings to delete it. Every No Fuss Games game lives on nofussgames.com, so clearing that site’s data removes your progress in all of them at once; each game keeps its own saves under its own names, so nothing else is affected. A content blocker that blocks stats.idistic.com stops the statistics entirely; the site works the same.
You never have to give us personal data to use this site. We make no automated decisions about you.
If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or to the authority in your own country. We’d appreciate hearing from you first.
