Klondike solitaire

Playing Klondike with a screen reader

Screen reader mode turns the card table into lists of buttons you can move through with the arrow keys. Every card is named in words, including its suit, and a short spoken line follows each move. The rules and the deals are exactly the same as on the drawn table.

Switch it on

Press the Screen reader mode button near the top of the game, use the switch in Settings, or open the game with ?sr=1 at the end of the address (open Klondike solitaire in screen reader mode). It stays on for every No Fuss game on this device until you switch it off. In Settings you can also choose short or full spoken detail.

How the game is laid out

  • The top row has six piles: the stock, the waste, and the spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds foundations.
  • Below it are columns 1 to 7. In each column you can reach every face-up card; the last one is the top card, the one you can play. Face-down cards are counted, not named.
  • Picking up a card in the middle of a column takes it together with every card on top of it.

Keys

KeyWhat it does
Left and Right arrowsMove to the previous or next pile in the same row.
Up and Down arrowsIn a column, move between its face-up cards. Up from the deepest one goes to the top row; Down from the top row goes to the columns.
1 to 7Jump to the top card of that column.
Home and EndFirst or last pile of the row.
Enter or SpacePick up the card (or cards) here. Then move to another pile and press Enter again to put them down. On the stock: turn over cards.
EscapePut the cards you picked up back.
DDraw: turn over the stock, or turn the waste back over when the stock is empty.
FSend the top card here (or the card you picked up) to its foundation.
WWhere can this go? Lists every place the card or cards here can be moved to.
RRead the whole table: stock, waste, foundations and every column.
UUndo the last move.
HHint. The first hint asks you to agree, because hints come from a solver that knows the face-down cards.
VSwitch between short and full spoken detail.
Question markSay all the keys.

What you hear

  • “Seven of hearts onto eight of spades, column 2. Column 4 now shows the five of clubs.”
  • “Moving 3 cards from column 4, nine of hearts to seven of hearts.”
  • “Ace of spades to the spades foundation. The waste now shows the jack of clubs.”
  • “The nine of hearts can’t go on the six of clubs; it needs a black ten.”
  • “You won! All 52 cards are on the foundations.”

On a phone or tablet

On a phone or tablet with VoiceOver or TalkBack, swipe through the piles and double-tap a card to pick it up, then double-tap where it should go. The buttons below the table do what D, F, W and R do; Undo and Hint are in the toolbar above.

Something not working?

We have checked this mode with automated tests, not yet with screen reader users; we are looking for testers. Please tell us what works and what doesn’t at support@twindle.nl, and read our accessibility statement.
