How to play Arrowword

How to play

Tap a clue square to start its answer, or tap a white square and type. A clue square with two clues splits in two: the top clue's answer runs to the right, the bottom clue's answer runs down. The full clue is always shown in the bar above the grid.

Keys

On a computer, type with your keyboard: arrows move, Space switches between right and down, Tab jumps to the next clue and Backspace deletes. On a phone or tablet, use the letter keys under the grid.

Stuck?

Check word or Check puzzle crosses out wrong letters. Reveal letter and Reveal word fill in squares for you. Each of these counts as a hint, and so does the Hint button.

Sizes and daily

The 9×9 grid is the daily puzzle, the same for everyone, and it changes at midnight UTC. The taller 9×12 grid has about a third more answers for a longer solve.

Questions

What is an arrowword?

An arrowword, or arrow crossword, puts its clues inside the grid instead of in a list. Each clue square has an arrow pointing to the start of its answer. The same style is known as a Scandinavian or Swedish crossword.

Why are the clues so short?

Each clue has to fit inside one square, so the clues are one to three words. Tap a clue or any square of its answer to read it in full in the clue bar.

Do the arrows ever bend?

Not here. Every answer starts in the square right next to its clue and runs straight to the right or straight down, which keeps the grid easy to read on a phone.

Does checking or revealing count against me?

Check and reveal each count as a hint, which shows in your result. Your time still counts, so you can compare a clean solve with a helped one.

Where do the words come from?

Answers are everyday English words that work in both British and American spelling, and every clue was written for Puzzle Desk. Word lists: SCOWL and ENABLE.
